UAEM: Universities Allied for Essential Medicine

UAEM has been founded by American Medical Students who felt compelled to advocate for a fair patent policy at universities. In most low-income countries,  essential medication and vaccines are rarely available and usually not affordable.  Thus, people suffer and die from diseases that could be easily cured.

Especially concerning medication that has been partly developed by public founding should be accesible for the poorest who suffer the most. UAEM cooperates with the Médecins Sans Frontières innitiative Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines. UAEM activists comprise people from different subjects such as law, medicine and political science. Some successes have already been achieved, so look them up at the website and feel welcome to get engaged in your local chapter!

SCI stands for Service Civil International.

Founded in 1920 after World War I by a Swiss philanthropist, the first work camps were supposed to sustain international understanding among European nations.

Having its 90th anniversary this year, the SCI cooperates with the UNESCO in about 1,200 work camps in about 90 countries. The main aims of the projects are to forster underdeveloped infrastructure, to protect the environment, and to promote human rights and intercultural exchange.

After finishing the obligatory Civilian Service in Germany, I pursued international community service programs with SCI in Germany, France and Nepal.
I am conviced about the benefits of the social and academic experiences that I made in these projects. If you are interested in some impressions from the project in Nepal, please feel welcome to visit the following pages ("weiter").
